UK SONGWRITING CONTEST NEWS
The Guild of International Songwriters & Composers which has sponsored and supported the UK Songwriting Contest is pleased to announce again our sponsorship and support of the 2008 UK Songwriting Contest. Last years contest UK Songwriting Contest 2007 saw Guild members again win the songwriting competition in all main categories with many more Guild members finishing as runners-up. The standard of entries was again extremely high and the judges had an even more difficult task than in the previous 2006 year. The winners, runners up and finalists represented the very best of almost 5,000 entries. The 2008 UK Songwriting Contest contest is now open for postal entries. Professionals in the music business
know that this is the contest that gets writers noticed by people that matter
in the music industry. For example, no other song contest in the world can boast
that one of the winners, the Guild of International Songwriters & Composers
member Natalie Chua was discovered and signed by Simon Cowell and received a Platinum
Disc award for sales of 500,000. Every year winning contestants have had their
songs played on radio stations, and have had TV and radio and press interview
opportunities. Many of these are new writers who have never even entered a songwriting
contest before. This has led to management, music publishing offers and recording
opportunities for UK Songwriting Contest contestants . In the words of Channel

UK Songwriting Contest was launched with The BRIT Trust (the organisation behind

The American International Songwriting Competition
The
Guild is pleased to continue to support the American International Songwriting
Competition (ISC). Out of over 15,000 entries, Guild members, did extremely well
in the competition, with many honorable mentions in multiple categories.
The
winners were chosen by this year's prestigious panel of celebrity and industry
judges including Tom Waits; Loretta Lynn; Nelly Furtado; Robert Smith (The Cure);
Ray Davies (The Kinks); Ornette Coleman; John Mayall; Monte Lipman (President,
Universal Records); Charlie Walk (President, Epic Records); and many others. More
than $150,000 in cash and prizes will be shared among the 59 winners, including
an overall Grand Prize of $25,000 (US) cash -- the largest cash grand prize of
any songwriting competition in the world - and over $30,000 in merchandise and

Alliance - first to pay YouTube royalties
In April
2008 the MCPS-PRS Alliance will become the first collecting society in the World
to pay royalties from YouTube. This first distribution will cover historical and
recent usages (up to 31 December 2007) of MCPS and PRS members’ music which have
been performed on the video sharing website to UK audiences
